Pedigree

Pedigree (formally Pedigree Petfoods) is a dog food brand whose origins trace to 1934 when Mars Limited acquired Chappel Brothers, a Manchester firm producing canned dog food under the Chappie brand; the product line was renamed Pedigree in 1988 by Kal Kan Foods. Pedigree is a wholly owned subsidiary/brand of Mars Petcare, itself a division of the privately held Mars, Incorporated, headquartered in McLean, Virginia, USA. Mars Petcare entered India in the early 2000s by importing product on a small scale, opened a pilot plant in Hyderabad, and established local manufacturing there in 2007 - initially producing dry dog food domestically while other formats remained imported. Pedigree in India is now available across 70,000-80,000+ outlets, including roughly 7,000 specialty pet stores and veterinary clinics alongside larger retail chains, supermarkets, general stores and pharmacies. The brand's global R&D is underpinned by the Waltham Petcare Science Institute, and Mars Petcare's India portfolio also includes Whiskas, Sheba, Chappi, Royal Canin and more.
